Why is it important to have a Specialist?

Orthodontists are uniquely qualified specialists who correct improperly aligned teeth and jaws. They are specialists in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental and facial irregularities. The American Dental Association requires orthodontists to have at least two academic years of post-doctoral, advanced specialty training in orthodontics in an accredited program, after graduation from dental school.
Dr. Lee earned her certificate of advanced orthodontic training and her Master of Science degree from St. Louis University; which is the oldest, most established orthodontic school in the nation. All orthodontists are dentists. And although some general dentists may practice orthodontics only 6% of all the dentists in the US are certified specialists, or orthodontists. Make sure to ask your treating dentist whether or not he is a specialist who has completed at least two academic years of advanced specialty training.
